Michelle Obama surprised all the viewers when she was aired virtually at the Oscars this year for announcing the winner of the Oscar for the Best Picture – Argo.  She looked resplendent in her sleek silver gown which was a creation by Naaem Khan, who is apparently an Indo-American fashion designer.  She announced the winner at the stroke of midnight, which added a magical ‘Cinderella-like’ element to the entire event. Not only did she garner a lot of gossip for this move, but she also had to face the wrath of the Conservatives who had complaints against the First Lady’s rather commercial appearance at the Oscar ceremony.  That was harsh, but what added another twist to the appearance was Michelle Obama’s photoshopped picture of her silver Oscars dress in the Iranian press order to give it a more conservative look.  Michelle’s well-fitted sleeveless gown with a lower, yet suitable hemline was altered in a way that her shoulders and chest were covered to make the ensemble rather modest and in accordance with the Islamic culture.  Normally women who are being aired on TV are supposed to don a hijab and cover their legs and arms, however, the rules are relaxed for foreigners.  Only men in Islamic countries are given the freedom to wear what they lease and only sportsmen are given the permission to be photographed in bare legs. A lot of people were in for a rude shock, when Michelle Obama’s gown was revamped and modified as it contravened the Islamic principles.  A lot of foreign dignitaries have gone through their photographs being altered and photoshopped.  Even foreign movies are screened frame by frame for deleting explicit scenes and covering up the actors in accordance with the Islamic laws. The Iranian newspaper Fars not only altered the First Lady’s dress, but also objected to the decision of Argo winning the Oscar for the Best Picture as it was ‘anti-Iranian” in nature which is highly objectionable. This has sparked a lot of hot debates on social networking sites as a majority of the Iranians have expressed their displeasure at Argo’s win, which has presented Iranians in a negative light.  Many Iranians are contemplating to make their own film about the hostage crisis which would be their answer to Argo by putting all the facts in the right perspective. It seems like Michelle Obama’s warm gesture to her supporters in Hollywood has taken a lot of people by storm which includes the American Conservatives as well as the Iranian conservatives.  It has also given a new dimension to the Iranian defensive against Argo as an anti-Iran movie which is ‘ahistorical’ and has no significance.  All in all, it seems like the Oscars has formed the basis of another battle between the US and Iran – and this time it is ‘Argo’!

A revelation: "All developing and underdeveloped countries have a large number of illiterates!" You are neither surprised nor amused...I bet! "Revelation? Joking or what...!" you might say. And why should you be? It's been a Third World truth since ages. But what if you were to hear that 11 million Americans can't read English? You might say again, "Joking or what?" But this time, it's a TRUTH. Howsoever incredible it may sound, the fact remains that one out of every 20 American adults can't make out the head and tail of English language, leave apart English literature, according to a federal study conducted recently. This means that no less than 11 million Americans are unfit for performing even everyday tasks. The survey studied a varied sample of 19,000 adults, who are living in homes, college hostels and even those behind the bar. As many as 30 million adults have 'below basic' skills in English language. Their ability is so limited that they may not be able to make sense of a simple pamphlet, for example. However, those declared "illiterates" in the study include those, who may be well-versed with Spanish or any other foreign language but are unable to comprehend texts in English. Illiteracy is a blot for any progressive society, and more so in case of America, the "Global Superpower" (sounds hollow, no?). There must be something seriously wrong with the system of that country where a sizeable number of people don't know even their mother tongue that also happens to be the world's lingua franca, incidentally. Will you do something about it, Mr. Bush? At least, do give some thought to the issue if at all you get some free time after bothering for the rest of the world! The unthinkable is happening. Chetan Bhagat’s first draft of the script he was writing for Slaman’s movie has been rejected by Salman. The first draft of the proposed movie starring Salman has been rejected. Chetan whose earlier adaptations have been scripted into successful movies faced a challenge as Salman has returned the script saying that it was not commercial enough. Chetan Bhagat who otherwise is known for his frank behavior and voicing his concerns openly, seems to be taken aback by this decision of Salman. The writer is trying his hand at scriptwriting with Sajid Nadiadwala’s movie ‘Kick’. However, with Salman turing down the first draft of the script, Chetan will need to rework the script to come upto Slaman’s expectations who wants more worth for the story scripted by Chetan Bhagat. In his earlier statement to the media on getting this assignment from Sajid, Chetan was visibly excited and had mentioned that it was an honor to work as a scriptwriter and he himself was anxious for the upcoming opportunity. Things were different from the beginning as earlier stories were scripted from already written and popular stories of Chetan Bhagat. However, this time Chetan had to start from scratch and script a story for Salman Khan. Things seem to have gone offbeat and the writer had perhaps gone off track with Salman rejecting the first draft of the script. Sources pointed out that Chetan after writing the first draft of the script for Kick, which is a telgu remake of a hit movie headed to Salman’s home. He was accompanied by Sajid Nadiadwala. The visit was done with the intention of apprising Salman about the probable developments in the movie and share the script with Salman Khan. The star is known to give a patient hearing to Chetan and told him to wait as he read through the script. More did Slaman read, more his discontent grew with the story. He finally told Chetan and Sajid that the story is not up to mark and much needs to be done to improve upon the script to make it a commercial success in the Bollywood’s perspective. The whole episode seems as a crude joke for Chetan whose earlier books have been taken hands down as his stories identified with the common masses. However, this time things did not work out as Chetan would have thought them to be. A reason perhaps is that scriptwriting is an entirely different ballgame and the writer needs to rework his strategies. Perhaps it is time for Chetan to head back to his writing desk and come up with a script that matches Slaman’s aspirations. Slaman Khan is known to be very particular with his scripts and cannot take chances with something that is not at par with his standards. Fear phycosis and the need to shine bright among the Khan dynasty in Bollywood seem to be ruling Slaman’s mind and he perhaps cannot take chances. Time for Chetan to head to writing desk and come up with an impeccable script that can take bollywood by storm.

Jaideep Ahlawat loves to speak the truth. The actor who became known with Gangs of Wasseypur shares that he was jobless for a year after his movie Khatta Meetha.  Still, the hardcore actor says that he more than being a star, he still wants to be an actor. According to Jaideep Ahlawat, the film industry tests actors without a backing in Bollywood at every step. Sharing his views on his struggling days as an actor, Jaideep Ahlawat said that after passing out from Film and Television Institute of India, (FTTI) in Pune, he literally went from door to door in various production houses looking for work. Eventually, Khatta Meetha came his way followed by Chittagong. Though his work was appreciated in both these movies, the real acclaim came after Gangs of Wasseypur only. He admits that the movie has been a confidence booster for him. The actor was in Indore recently for a personal visit. Jaideep Ahlawat hails from Haryana and has dreams of making it big in the Bollywood one day owing to his acting skills. However, Bollywood has never been an easy sojourn, especially to those who come from Film and Television Institute of India (FTTI).

The story of Manoj Bajpayee, another Bollywood actor who has made it big is equally impressive. Manoj who was and remains much committed to the ethos of acting was not comfortable by cheap gimmicks that are sometimes used to gain popularity in Bollywood. The actor admitted that he had seen such hard times when he had no money for food also. He could heave a sign of relief only when the serial Swabhiman started giving him 2,000 per episode. The star who was appreciated for his role in critically acclaimed movies as Zubeida is as good doing serious roles too that test the actors to their limits.  Actors who come from theatre background are usually more comfortable doing challenging roles that our Bollywood stars sometimes find difficult to identify with. Still, success eludes them for long and they are often at the receiving end when it comes to getting success in quick succession. Is it the lack of creativity in our script writers or do the hardcore actors find it a tough task to come up to the reality of masala movies that Bollywood makes bowing to the need of the hour? Perhaps, the answer lies beneath the finer lines that are often ignored in the need of getting quick success and raking in more profits. Actors who come from Film and Television Institute of India are more grounded and are often seen looking for challenging roles that hardly come their way in Bollywood. This makes them look for roles that which do not fall in their preview. Thankfully, lately a lot of movies with creative topics have come up and hardcore actors as Manoj Bajpayee and Jaideep Ahlawat have a lot to offer. The success of Gangs of Wasseypur is perhaps a welcome sign for these actors who otherwise find it hard to make their mark in Bollywood.

If you had wished that censor board had not clipped some steamy scenes out of the movie, last time you were in the theatre, this could be your perfect chance to view the same. Bedroom encounters, lip locks and other controversial scenes that have made waves will be perhaps open first time for public preview. Scenes from Bollywood movies that have come under the scanner of censor board’s scissors will be out in the open for everyone to watch. Cut-Uncut Festival that is planned to be held in New Delhi later this month will screen such controversial scenes from over 100 Bollywood movies. The never before seen footage from movies is set to interest audience as it will open a new perspective of Bollywood that is often hidden and ignored. What better, you can even be a part of the discussions that will be held post screening. These discussions will focus on sex, nudity, portrayal of religion and on screen violence in Bollywood movies. The festival is proposed to be held from April 25-30 and will screen movies as Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur. Prepare to watch censored scenes from the movie, you even thought could not exist. Cut and Uncut festival will also screen movies featuring Bollywood legends Devika Rani. This is being done with the intention of tracing the roots of adult scenes in the movies. Similarly, Yash Chopra’s ‘Dharamputra’ is set to be screened to look at the origin of religion in the movies. Information and Broadcasting Ministry is organizing the festival and the same is a part of series of events that the ministry plans to hold. Other in the line includes exhibiting unique film posters, student film festivals and screening rare movies including some silent movies. These series of events that are planned to be held between April and May are being held in collaboration with Film Division, National Film Archives of India, Film and Television Institute of India and Central Board of Film Certification. It is expected that such a collaboration of film fertinity will generate unique interest from the audience and they will gain access to various facts that are often ignored. Another even that the ministry plans to hold is to screen documentaries and exhibitions that will focus on restored posters. Screening of a silent movie ‘Throw of Dice’ is also expected to be a part of one of these festivals.  The movie as the name signifies is based on a unique incident on Indian Epic Mahabharata and will help the viewers develop a new perspective of the incident. The festival is also set to see a live performance by Ustad Nishad Khan. This series of event which will set in with the Cut-Uncut Festival is set to attract audience from diverse groups including students, professionals, theatre personalities and even Bollywood stars. Perhaps the discussions that will originate will help in bringing a decisive change in the mind set of the general public that often views Bollywood movies as a source of entertainment and fails to read between the lines.

Filmmaker Zoya Akthar might have come up with a short movie “Bombay Talkies” but is not hopeful about its success. The 25 minute movie is a collection of four short movies and traces the history of Indian Cinema. Zoya better known for her direction in Bollywood movies as “Luck by Chance” and “Zindagi na Milegi Dobara” has teamed up with Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar and Dibanker Banerjee to bring a collection of four short stories. Zoya however is sceptical about the success of her movie commercially as Indian audience is averse to any concept of short movies and the director expects the movie to fall flat, even before it is released. However with the option of internet and film festivals available, Zoya is hopeful that she would be able to reach out to the learned audience which appreciates quality and has an understanding of Indian cinema. She however expressed her happiness that the short movie has given her the opportunity to team up with best directors in Bollywood and she hopes that she will learn a lot from them. She admits that she is the least experienced director of the lot and will hopefully have to lot to grasp from the talented bunch of directors who are working alongside. The movie has a budget of 1.5 crores and Zoya has even managed to rope in Katrina Kaif. Zoya was also thankful to her production house, Excel Entertainment which gave her the free hand to experiment, until the time she kept within the budget. Zoya expressed her satisfaction that she had a great budget for a short movie. Katrina too did rope in and did not charge Zoya for the movie. Perhaps Zoya hints that this is Katrina’s way of contributing to her cause. Zoya Akthar, daughter of the gifted writer Javed Akthar finds solace in experimenting and trudging a different path. She said that she could not understand the obsession of the Indian Film industry with the Rs 100 crores mark that all of them wish to accomplish. She said that perhaps it is amusing enough that when a movie makes 100 crores, this too makes news. Perhaps India is the only country in the world where the news of a movie making 100 crores too makes news. She pointed out that it was interesting as to how the film producers link this to the audience. The press too has to play its part and should focus on the creative credentials of the movie not focusing too much on the financial aspects of the movie. Film critics too have a role in this regard. They also need to write on conventional topics and motivate the audience to watch creative cinema, instead of running after commercial movies only. Until the time, audience learns to appreciate the conventional cinema, the true worth of an actor cannot be realized and they will be motivated only to come up with commercial movies that have little worth in literary world.

With water scarcity becoming a key issue in Maharashtra, even Bollywood stars are not being spared for any laxity. Only a few days ago, veteran actor Sadashiv Amrapukar was in news for reportedly wasting water during a social gathering at his home. The latest ire of public anger is no one else than Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. The team of SRK’s movie Chennai Express has come under scanner for wasting precious water at times when the state is reeling under water scarcity. Irrigation department in Maharashtra has reportedly asked for a detailed investigation into the matter and asked the production team of Chennai Express to come up with a suitable explanation. The film crew had used water from Dhom dam in Satara for shooting, even as the region is suffering from worst water crisis in the last 40 years. Local villagers were up in arms against the film crew. As per the villagers, the film crew had not only extracted water from the dam but also set up a garden for shooting purpose and water was used excessively for its upkeep. Clarifying further on the issue, Pradip Patil, the Executive Engineer at Dhol dam said that irrigation officers are looking into the issue and report on the issue will be submitted shortly to higher authorities. The report as per Pradip would be comprehensive and will give all the answers to any potential questions that would come up for discussion at a later stage. Departmental sources clarified that necessary permissions had been issued to the film crew for shooting at the dam site. The production team had already paid advance for shooting. However, the use of water from the dam was not allowed and the crew had violated the necessary permissions by using the dam water. The dam is a lifeline for the farmers in the region and such callous approach on part of film production unit is highly unacceptable. However, Krishanu Sarvabhaum , line producer for Red Chillies Entertainment strongly refuted the claims made by the irrigation department. He said that water at sets was purchased and workers at the set were provided with mineral water for drinking purpose. Shah Rukh Khan has meanwhile decided to maintain silence on the issue. He has so far not issued any comment on the topic and is instead focusing on completing the shooting. It is worth mentioning here that the Bollywood superstar is missing the ongoing IPL matches in order to complete the shooting for the movie. The controversy on use of dam water by the movie crew is likely to boil into a political controversy as opposition parties are looking for issues. The water scarcity in Maharashtra can add fuel to the fire. State Government is already under pressure to perform and does not wish to get embroiled in any new controversy. It is also for Bollywood stars to consider the ground realities and be considerate on issues that impact human life as any wastage of resources can be of severe consequences for one and all.
